In the week that we totally need to rock the vote, no one gets more nominations for awesomeness than the amazing Nona Hendryx. As a vital part of Labelle, the legendary super group responsible for the rightfully celebrated Lady Marmalade, Hendryx did much of the group’s writing, allowing them to dive into rare stratospheres of rock and roll and fabulous science fiction flecked soul.

Hendryx, who had a couple of compositions decorating late night cable thriller The Surrogate, also married the thrills of romantic adventure with the perfect description for horror film victims with her infectious song Soft Targets.

An activist and a mighty force of nature, Hendryx is still keeping the rhythm alive at https://www.facebook.com/nonahendryxofficial/ and https://www.nonahendryx.com/.

Cherrelle 2

The union of Fay Wray and King Kong was so popular that they are even included in TCM’s Leading Couples book. Naturally, this tragic romance between beautiful human and hirsute simian has been praised and parodied multiple times. One of the most ‘80s celebrations of this partnership has to be the fun video for Cherrelle’s dynamic version of I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On.

Later reaching pop-rock heights with Robert Palmer’s stylized version and ascending to diva-like glories with Mariah Carey’s appreciation of it, many believe that Cherrelle’s upbeat original is the best – or perhaps beast – of the lot.

This sweetly sassy diva, whose second release High Priority was also full of era friendly pop and soul tunes, is still being honored by Tabu (the company who released her recordings) with an official page at https://www.facebook.com/Cherrelleofficial/.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: The Jones Girls

JONESGIRLS-Nice1

For several years, I lived with a guy with the last name of Jones. His mom was a petite blonde woman named Shirley. I could probably, truthfully, claim that I’ve never really been in love. But if I miss anyone, it has to be this guy. Therefore, (R and B sensations) The Jones Girls, no relation to my long distant paramour by the way, have always sparked a subtle interest in me.

Nicely, I have recently discovered that they performed a mysterious and sensuous version of Children of the Night, probably best known as a semi-standard of The Stylistics. (It’s even rumored that their version found its way onto an episode of The Walking Dead.) But, I have always preferred my luscious divas to my dapper gents and the spooky vibe provided by these siblings, including (perhaps necessarily) a sister named Shirley, makes me imagine that any creature, be it seductive vampire or trembling love struck ghoul, could find some romance in the witching hour.
