Music to Make Horror Movies By: Barbara McNair

Cult aficionados know the exquisite Barbara McNair from her association with writer-director Jess Franco. Forever tempting in Venus in Furs, one of Franco’s most fully realized fever dreams, she also sang the theme song to 99 Women, one of his more popular (and sleazy) women in prison epics.

barbara venusBut McNair was a maverick on many levels. She was the first black woman to host her own syndicated variety show. She also co-starred on Broadway and recorded for Motown Records, scoring a minor hit or two with them. Appearing on many of the hottest shows of the ‘60s and ‘70s, she always added elegance and flair, as well.

Here, she gives the dapper, joking Dean Martin a run for his money with their take on the standard, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, an appropriate title for a horror blog if there ever was one.

McNair, who passed away from throat cancer in 2007, lives on in memory at http://www.barbaramcnair.com.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Martha Reeves and the Vandellas

She was one of Motown’s reigning divas and, along with her famed backup group the Vandellas, Martha Reeves also provided one of the most prescient songs on the 1976 Carrie soundtrack.

carrie-1976-19-seductive-chrisAs the evil minded Chris (Nancy Allen) and Billy (John Travolta) cruise around, conspiring revenge and destruction, Heat Wave, one of Reeves’ most iconic numbers, plays on the car radio. With all the fiery prom night action that occurs soon after, this song proves to be a wise choice, full of dark, foreshadowing measures.

Reeves, who has also worked as a journalist and politician, still performs around the world, often in benefit concerts. More information on her astounding career and activities is available at http://www.missmarthareeves.com/.

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Diana Ross

H. G. Wells probably never planned on this! But, that old pervert probably would have liked it! Trying to reinvent herself after years of Motown servitude, Diana Ross’ musical career on RCA records included an eclectic mix of operatic pop ballads (All of You), covers (Why Do Fools Fall in Love?) and sassy odes to sexuality (Muscles).

Astute horror freaks, though, know she got maximum mileage out of terror classic The Island of Dr. Moreau with Eaten Alive, the title track of her 1985 release.

…and while Joseph Gian, Ross’ co-star in the video, is probably best known for his work as Det. Tom Ryan on Knots Landing, he, also, has a couple horror credits on his resume with roles in The Night Stalker (1987) and Godzilla: The Series. He is, also, rumored to have joined the cast of the upcoming But Deliver Us From Evil, a film that details what happens when a demon succubus begins wiping out the male population of New York. Hmm…I bet he’s now glad that the divine Miss Ross gave him a little practice, all those years ago!

Music to Make Horror Movies By: The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game (Tne Marvelettes)

Somebody better lock these chicks up! This is filthy!

Indeed, The Marvelettes take on Smokey Robinson’s classic track The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game is full of menacing slink. In fact, Wanda Rogers’ seductive lead vocal would probably put some fear into even the most determined monster. And I don’t mean Motown maestro Berry Gordy (who, traditionally, robbed these amazing women of the majority of the group’s profits) – though, I suppose, ultimately, that wouldn’t be far off base!

Oh, well… For now, just listen and enjoy!
