Review: Sacrament: The Film

One of my biggest dreams as a horror fan is to have a homosexual character at the center of one of those seemingly endless Friday the 13th reboots. But until some major studio comes to its senses – not likely, I suppose – I am grateful that the world has writer-director Shawn Ewert’s (very independent) Sacrament: The Film. This fun backwoods horror epic is particularly impactful due to its focus on Lee (Trey Ford) and Blake (Avery Pfeiffer), a young gay couple, and its look at the poisonous after effects of the violence caused by those belonging to the religious right.

Taking off on a traditional road trip, Lee and Blake and their friends soon find themselves sequestered in a small town for the night. Unfortunately for them, this burg’s residents believe in punishing any that they view as transgressors and, eventually, turning them into food for their ravenously faithful flock. Borrowing heavily from genre favorites like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and more obscure flicks like Terror at Red Wolf Inn, Ewert still makes his mark here by focusing on the hypocrisy and anger of those who, supposedly, live a kind and sacred life. This is, obviously, a timely notion as we live in a climate where bathroom laws and hate bills are being promoted with maniacal zeal.marilyn burns sacrament

Nicely, Ewert, as a director, supplies multiple levels, though. It is almost possible to sympathize with the quiet town folk who are bombarded with the obnoxious activities of the film’s central youths – at first. He also pays homage to his influences by casting TTCM mainstays Marilyn Burns and Ed Guinn in smaller yet pertinent roles. Burns, in particular, brings a quiet yet seething intensity to her activities here, making her untimely passing in 2014 feel all the more tragic.

Meanwhile, the rest of the cast also handles itself deftly, a rarity in low budget projects, with Ford’s level headed Lee, Amanda Rebholz’s sensitive and playful Lorri and Joshua Cole Simmons’ understandingly frantic Brahm deserving special notice. Nicely, Ford and Pfeiffer gamely offer up their flesh to the masses as well, counterbalancing the preponderance of female nudity in projects such as this. Unfortunately, this still feels like a social or political act in a genre where bare femininity is the norm and the playing field is rarely leveled.Sacrament 2

Granted, there are minor disappointments here. Ewert builds a complex narrative. Thus, his ending could have benefited from some more high stakes escape techniques. It feels a bit abrupt after all that has come before. But, overall, this is a truly solid, admirable – and important effort. Sacrament: The Film offers up all the savage thrills of the tried and true slasher genre while also staking a claim as a statement against bigotry and hate. Bravo!

The Backside of Horror: Dreamaniac (1986)

Let’s face it, half the fun of horror and exploitation is seeing some hot bodies frolicking around in the buff. And while I worship the female form, I believe exploitation definitely veers into the exploitive when only gorgeous women are on display while their male counterparts remain chastely buttoned up. Therefore, The Backside of Horror salutes the filmmakers and actors whom even up the score a bit by showing us instances of hot and juicy male flesh in their bloody celluloid fantasies.

I must admit. The soiree that was thrown to get me into Sister Rosario’s Leather Tutorial when I was 18 was totally and regrettably forgettable.

Thankfully, Pat’s party to help get her sister Jodi into a sorority, in 1986’s totally bad yet achingly fun Dreamaniac, comes complete with bitchy backstabbing, death by electrocution, an alluring succubus and lots and lots of male nudity. dream 2

Yes, unlike his current 1313 offerings, which feature plenty of gym boys whose underwear remains firmly on, director David DeCoteau actually fills the frames here with plenty of bouncing male ass cheeks! This includes a deliciously long opening intro featuring male lead Thomas Bern, playing the most unlikely heavy metal rocker ever committed to the screen, walking naked, in light strewn languidness, down a never ending dream corridor. When Jodi’s antagonistic rival Frances beds Brad (Brad Laughlin), the object of the other’s affections, more fleshy global goodness is soon on display, as well. Of course, tough guy Ace (Michael Warren) does give a very homoerotic take on DeCoteau’s favorite celluloid subject – the trussed-up jock in tighty whities. So, there is something for everyone, here!

Filled with rancid performances, with future adult film star Ashlyn Gere, here billed as Kim McKamy, giving the only fairly decent portrayal as the determined Pat, and super silly dialogue (with “There’s no phone? What if I have to call my broker? Mondo bad planning, Jodi!” and “I’m a Lionel Ritchie girl” among the winners), Dreamaniac eventually succumbs to the delightful. Well, that is, if like me, you enjoy the cheese on your bread a bit on the burnt and moldy side.

Seduction can definitely be sticky. That is something that damp lothario Rick (sharply etched with dastardly charm by Thomas Blake Jr.) unexpectedly discovers in Cabin Fever 2.

pool toothAs a popular stud using his status to take advantage of the lovely yet awkward Frederica (a sweetly nuanced Amanda Jelks), Rick soon finds his underhandedness rewarded with a smashing poolside death. With the attempted coitus interrupted by Frederica’s fleshy dissolution (due to drinking infected water), Rick does (eventually) show some heart.

Initially walking away from the desperate girl, he has a reluctant change in ass-e-r-r-r-attitude. But his attempt to pull her from her watery destruction lands him, unconscious, beside her, as both sink to their doom.cf2 butt

Both brave performers bare all here, proving that old cinematic adage that sex, horror films and high school never mix.

jr3 talkWarning! Apparently, it is no longer just premarital sex and flagrant drug use that can get you viciously slashed in a horror film – attempted robbery is now, also, a no-no!jr3

In the recently released Joy Ride 3: Road Kill meth addicts Candy (Sara Mitich) and Rob (J. Adam Brown) try to pull a heist on the revenge filled Rusty Nail (now embodied by Freddy Vs Jason’s Ken Kirzinger). But, of course, things do not end well for them.

jr3 buttFortunately for inspired viewers, this less-than-dynamic duo are able to enjoy a spastic romp just before Mr. Nail comes barging through the door. And – while most directors would have concentrated, solely, on the Mitich’s much available flesh, here, the divine Declan O’Brien, also, gives us a gander at everything Brown has to offer, as well.

corbin sexTalk about your grand one upping! While Zac Efron spends plenty of time, shirtless, in the recent comedy hit Neighbors, his former High School Musical co-star Corbin Bleu does him one better in the deliriously fun horror romp Nurse.

As the Steve, the EMT boyfriend of newbie nurse Danni (cute and perky Katrina Bowden), Bleu kindly shows us his smooth backside as this young couple goes at it in a very unprofessional manner in the workplace.corbin butt

Of course, no one acts particularly professionally here with lead Paz de la Huerta, as the titled psychotic Florence Nightingale, spending plenty of time draped in vinyl, dangerously high mini-skirts and often nothing at all!

Oh, well! Leave it to a former clean cut teen idol to balance things out a bit!

The Backside of Horror: “Superstition 2” (1989)

While my overactive mouth has definitely put my ass on the line a time or two, I have never ever thrown my butt out a window! I swear!

It’s probably a good thing, too, as that trick was done with rare perfection by Todd Conaster as Virgil in the little known 1989 Italian-American teen horror Superstition 2 (AKA Witch Story and Streghe).

Blurry Virgil Butt!

Blurry Virgil Butt!

Directed by Alessandro Capone (who, also, wrote the rather obscure Body Count, which starred David Hess and Mimsy Farmer), Superstition 2 concerns a brother and sister who inherit a house that has been cursed by their distant relative, a vengeful witch. A group of friends joins them to help in refurbishing the property. Of course, the girls soon find themselves possessed by the scorned sorceress and the boys are soon meat gumbo!

Bloody Virgil Face!

Bloody Virgil Face!

But not before Conaster’s Virgil, in a moment of comic relief, bares his cheeks to his passing brethren – earning him an especially bloody death at the hands of two of his feminine companions. Some guys just don’t learn!

As for the film, itself, the acting of (the unknowns as) the teens is rather overblown, but veterans Ian Bannen, as a wild eyed and regret filled priest, and Deanna Lund, as the deliciously evil temptress, more than make up for it. There are, also, some impressive kills including one involving a mysteriously appearing chainsaw from the middle of a swimming pool! Let King Arthur try that one!

The Backside of Horror: Bojesse Christopher, “Sometimes They Come Back…Again”

Sometimes, I look like such a demon upon waking that I even frighten my Incredible Hulk action figures. (And you wonder why I am in my 40s and live alone!!!)

Boj2The magnetic Bojesse Christopher, who truly enlivened such efforts as Sleepwalkers, Meatballs 4 and Point Break in the 90s, also rises like a devilish entity in 1996 sequel shocker Sometimes They Come Back…Again. But, soon Christopher’s Vinnie takes on a much more pleasing — and temporarily naked — form.Boj3

Of course, the evil Vinnie is eventually dispatched – but not before providing plenty of menace to co-stars Michael Gross and (a young) Hillary Swank…and plenty of eye candy to desirous viewers in the know!
