Review: Fort Doom

Published November 16, 2018 by biggayhorrorfan

debbie fort doomPost-election week there may, surprisingly, not be a more appropriate horror film to watch than 2004’s Fort Doom. A low budget, seemingly home grown effort, this feature stars the always compelling Debbie Rochon and the eternally gothic Billy Drago, who gives a very disturbing, leveled performance as one of the production’s not so red herring villains here.

The film itself follows the Southern adventures of Lacy Everett (Rochon) and her group of working girls as they set up shop in a seemingly idyllic community. The Civil War has been recently fought and lost, and while there is emotional fallout to be found everywhere, hope abounds, as well. That is until Everett and her ladies discover that a serial killer is loose in their new tightly locked home base. As folks begin to disappear and it looks like all evidence points to the demented town mortician (Drago), it soon appears that a deeper, more deadly conspiracy at hand.

As with many indie terror efforts, there are many passages of stationary dialoging here. One also almost wishes that the producers had picked a different period of time to recreate due to the college theater costuming alone. While some of Rochon’s outfits have a bit of a stream punk effect, more than anything it is obvious that the budget did not allow for a real life recreation of the clothes that the characters would have actually worn in this era. Kind viewers will find that this gives the enterprise an enjoyable silliness, though. Others, well…Fort Doom.jpg

Surprisingly, what is not silly here is how accurately screenwriter Matthew Howe, who developed the story with the film’s director J. Christian Ingvordsen, seemingly predicated our current misogynistic and racist government controlled by powerful white men. Willing to do anything to stay in power, the vengeful founding father types in this film ultimately serve as a chilling prophecy and a reminder of how this destructive mindset has always existed in our culture.

That Rochon, who has survived her own share of personal hardships over the years, is our stand-in here, supplying strength and resolve and sassiness, is also a plus and an assurance that perhaps, like her Lacy, we will truly rise above this current regime, as well.

Putting the Femme in FANtastic!

Lowry in “Model Hunger”

Ladies choice is always awesome, but being able to pick your favorite ladies is pretty cool, as well. FANtastic Horror Film Festival is allowing you to do just that. Using the link, below, you can vote for such horror luminaries as Debbie Rochon, Lynn Lowry, Tiffany Shepis, Kaylee Williams and others.

Williams

Williams

The big news here, of course, is the fact that Rochon’s acclaimed directing debut, Model Hunger, has gotten multiple nominations. But Chomp, the fun horror comedy short written and directed by Lynne Hansen, is also worthy of note, and Williams, who has always given emotionally charged performances, is definitely worth your consideration in the Best Supporting Actress in a Short category, as well.

Review: The Tell Tale Heart

Published August 25, 2014 by biggayhorrorfan

tell tale heart
I have a feeling a platoon of estrogen fueled ghosts are going to be paying writer-director Bart Mastronardi a visit soon. Whether it’ll be Bette Davis, Joan Bennett and Agnes Moorehead or some other golden age dream team is anyone’s guess. But goddess knows, many of those classic screen sirens have to be pissed that Mastronardi didn’t create Miss Lamarr, the faded Hollywood actress who, even in a supporting capacity, is one of the highlights of his version of The Tell Tale Heart, in their lifetimes.

Of course, the milkily doomed Lamarr is enacted with regal precision by Alan Rowe Kelly, a true student of those sassy broads. Therefore, he and Mastronardi establish a sense of gothic glamour throughout the entirety of the piece, one portion of the highly anticipated anthology film Tales of Poe.

As expected, as the story’s narrator and primary participant, legendary genre actress Debbie Rochon does an exemplary job. As a former nurse relating the violent origins of her arrival at a mental health asylum, Rochon glows with a crackled subtlety. It is one of her most nuanced performances in a career layered with passionate portrayals. lesleh

The true surprise here, though, is Lesleh Donaldson as Evelyn Dyck, one of asylum’s boldest patients. Donaldson, of course, is well loved for her pretty final girl/victim roles in slasher stalwarts like Happy Birthday to Me, Curtains and Funeral Home. Here, obviously relieved to be given something tangible to do, she attacks her role with comedic gusto. Never straining into parody, she nearly steals the show, revealing largely unseen skills in her (obviously) eclectic repertoire.

Mastronardi, himself, gives this whole outing the organdy visual flair of Corman’s earlier Poe efforts mixed with a dash of Hammer’s (more violent) latter years. The sheen of grizzly humor he supplies is also grand, making one truly curious about the final two efforts in this sure to be dazzling spectacle.

Crinoline Head 2: It’s All in the Chapeau!!!

Looking backward and forward at the same time can, unfortunately, lead to whiplash.

The sweetest kind of whiplash, though, comes with the announcement that director-writer Tommy Faircloth is revisiting his acclaimed slasher Crinoline Head after nearly twenty years.

With a cast including horror goddess Debbie Rochon and Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies’ Jason Vail, Crinoline Head 2: Dorchester’s Revenge will seemingly offer more intense thrills than the original.

Big Gay Horror Fan has always believed that there is no problem that a bottle of Nair and a double chocolate bar couldn’t solve.

In Fear Of

As you all know, Big Gay Horror Fan’s biggest fear is himself! Thankfully (for viewers), that is NOT one of the fears that is covered in the amazingly fun, absolutely free web series In Fear Of featuring genre legend Debbie Rochon and other amazing horror regulars like Raine Brown, David Marancik and Suzi Lorraine.

Directors Scott W. Perry, Jeremiah Kipp and Mike Polizzi DO cover such fears as Selenophobia (fear of the moon), Podophobia (fear of feet) and Thanatophobia (fear of feet), though.

Kipp’s initial segment Monophobia: Fear of Being Alone is a wacky delight featuring an energetic, humorously layered performance from Rochon (sporting a sleekly gamine hair style). Rochon has a perfect scene partner in Marancik who gives a subtle and committed performance as a man caught in a torturous date that just will not end! For all those concerned, though, this piece’s highlight definitely has to be when Rochon, giddily, reads graphic gay sex personals out loud to a clearly unresponsive Marancik.debbiedavid
