Great Performances: Sybil Danning

A stern look from someone in real life can sometimes stop you dead in your tracks. Silent expression is also an efficient tool to communicate emotion on film. This is often difficult to pull off, though, as it must be done subtly to be truly effective.

Thankfully for genre fans, one of the most exciting performances to utilize a bare minimum of dialogue and rely almost entirely on facial fluidity, is Sybil Danning’s commanding and efficient Ruger in the beloved cult favorite L.A. Bounty.

l.a. bounty 1A former cop turned determined bounty hunter, Ruger here is dead set on taking down Cavanaugh, a vile criminal who murdered her former partner and who has recently kidnapped Mike Rhodes, a handsome mayoral candidate. Much of Ruger’s time is spent protecting Mike’s uncooperative wife Kelly, a woman whom Cavanaugh wants decidedly dead. As Ruger tries, mightily, to protect this innocent bystander, she systematically works her way through Cavanaugh’s associates. Growing ever more stern and calculating, when she finally gets to the man, himself, even the plot’s fun twists and turns will not deter her.

Nicely, with a simple yet powerful presence, Danning outguns even the most treasured male action icons here. She is cool yet obviously emotionally conflicted, delivering a classic performance – truly one of the best in the exploitation medium and beyond. The rest of the cast is also impressive with Wings Hauser oozing blistered menace as Cavanaugh and the underrated Lenore Kasdorf (Guiding Light, Missing in Action) bringing nervy grace to Kelly Rhodes. Drive-in enthusiasts will also cheer to the contributions of such esteemed participants as Henry Darrow and Robert Quarry.LA-Bounty-3

But it is Danning’s heart that truly provides the significant pulse of this piece. Granted, the action beats, including the anticipated shotgun blasts and deaths by torture and electrocution, are exciting. But she truly imbues this make believe world with its soul. Not surprisingly, a look at the credits shows that she wrote the story and also produced this emotional slice of mayhem… a true tribute to feminine power and the bad-assery of women everywhere, if there ever was one.

Tom Neyman: An Appreciation

Published November 26, 2016 by biggayhorrorfan

Vanity (Action Jackson), Lucinda Dooling (Lovely But Deadly), Alexis Arquette (Bride of Chucky), Kim McGuire (Cry-Baby), legendary director-writers Herschell Gordon Lewis and Ted V. Mikels…The film industry has lost a slew of its iconic outsiders in 2016. Now the immortal Tom Neyman can be added to that list.

Neyman, who passed away at the age of 80 on November 13th, may be the most unusual of all these creative entities, though. An accomplished stage actor, Neyman is known for only one celluloid outing – a role that took him over 25 years to gain any notoriety for. But, as The Master in Manos: The Hands of Fate, Neyman strikes such a foreboding and impressive figure that he, ultimately, should go down in history as one of the most essential horror antagonists of all time.

Regarded as one of the worst movies ever made, Manos finally found public appreciation, after having been  exiled to oblivion after its 1966 premiere, when Mystery Science Theater 3000 parodied it on a classic 1993 episode. Ever since, Neyman has gained a deserved, ever growing following. In fact, horror icon Elvira is among the movie’s biggest fans and a recent poll revealed the Manos show to be MST3K viewers’ favorite episode of all time.

Therefore, Neyman is so much more than an actor in a singular role. He will always be a prime example of the impossible come to life – of that ray of hope beaming through the tangled corridors of darkness. He found an odd fame, decades after it should have come, from a movie that many would dismiss outright.

He is the role model for everyone who strives, despite the odds, to connect with an unforgiving, uninterested public. He is one for the believers and for society’s hardworking misfits…and his legacy will live on forever!

Of further note: Neyman, briefly, reprised his role of The Master in the upcoming Manos Returns, the long awaited Manos sequel: https://www.facebook.com/manosreturns.

Jackey Neyman Jones, Manos’ Debbie and Tom’s beloved daughter, maintains a blog, featuring stories of her father, as well. https://www.facebook.com/Debbiesmanos/

Music to Make Horror Movies By: Frankenstein’s Daughter

Published April 24, 2016 by biggayhorrorfan

frankenstein's daughter

Sometimes when you need to be taken into hand, it doesn’t matter who is doing it. Heck…even a Daddy Bird would do in a pinch!

Of course, as Page Cavanaugh and his Trio warned us in 1958 drive-in horror Frankenstein’s Daughter, a daddy bird is bound to fly away.

So….until next time, when perhaps beggars can be choosers…

Astro Radio Z Presents “Why Exploitation?”

Published February 20, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

flavia
You’ve been warned! This is where it gets real!

Ever since Sister Theresa, the principal at the Catholic high school I attended, tried to cover up the fact that one of the visiting faculty tried to force me into becoming his personal mattress slave, I’ve taken a voracious liking to films in which nuns do incorrigible things! While vicarious revenge is thrilling, I, also, feel that those sleazy celluloid morsels known as nunsploitation films serve as a very potent look at the disfranchisement of women in society and how their sexuality is used to bind and entrap them.

Thus, I was pleased as punch to join host Derrick Carey and crew (Kate Owens, Seth Poulin, Andrew Shearer and Scott Davis) on a recent episode of superlative podcast Astro Radio Z to talk about Flavia, The Heretic. This film is full of all sorts of Euro-madness, but at its heart, beats a true message about the treatment of women in society.

Amidst the chat about such titles as Fight for Your Life, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookersand Massacre in a Women’s Prison, we also talk about what exploitation means to us and why we love these films so much. The revelations may just surprise you. So, what are you waiting for? Get downloading now!
