Wicked Enigma Season Trailer

Published May 18, 2019 by biggayhorrorfan

One of my favorite things about soap operas is how they add elements of horror and suspense to their mix – people rising from the dead, gothic vaults filled with kidnapped heiresses and Frankenstein inspired mad scientists either saving or destroying the day.

Thus, I am really excited about the independently produced series Wicked Enigma, a dramatic show based around a slasher film motif and featuring a number of characters that fall within the LGBTQIA spectrum. A first season trailer has  recently been released, promising plenty of beautiful people and beautiful kills!

Tuesday Knight on Matlock

Published December 29, 2018 by biggayhorrorfan

If music really is the food of love then Tuesday Knight is dining happy. The A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master star has released numerous recordings over the years, including her popular ANOES 4 theme song. Of course, rhythm lives in her blood. Knight’s father, Baker, was a talented songwriter whose material was covered by everyone from Paul McCartney to Frank Sinatra.

Showing familial pride, Knight covered Lonesome Town, one of her father’s most recognized tunes on The Starlet, a third season episode of the popular detective series Matlock. This fun episode, featuring such stalwarts as Roddy McDowall and Anne Francis, revolves around the murder of a conniving contestant at a beauty contest. Tuesday M1

As the perky Abby Smith, a hopeful participant, Knight radiates with sweetness in the background of several ensemble set-ups. That her cohorts here include DeepStar Six’s Nia Peeples (Fame), Rebecca Staab (the Invisible Girl in the Roger Corman produced Fantastic Four) and (long term The Young and the Restless cast member)Tonya Williams only sweetens the pot.

Nicely, she is finally given primary focus as she, lovingly, performs her father’s lyrics. It’s a brief yet potent appearance and a boon to devoted Freddy Krueger lovers everywhere.

Review: Wicked Enigma

Published September 21, 2018 by biggayhorrorfan

WE

Move over, Riverdale! The sexy cast of Wicked Enigma is ready to take your place.

Big words, perhaps, but this LGBTQ friendly project, revolving around the gothic, soap strewn craziness that ensues after a tragic onset accident, is full of attractive, well cast people doing their devious best to stay alive….very much like a certain, very popular CW show.

Nicely, queer fans are sure to thrill to the complicated romance of Max (Terrence Edmonds), an out and proud cinematic genius in the making, and Austin (Andrew Etzel), a well known yet extremely closeted actor. Edmonds and Etzel provide nice layers to their characterizations, aligning themselves, sympathetically, with the audience. But directors Edmonds and Jake Doull work wonders with all of the performers, particularly with Charlotte Evelyn Williams, who shines with vibrant defiance as the rejected Sasha, making the first episode a true pleasure to view.

In Fond Remembrance Of: Joseph Mascolo

Published December 17, 2016 by biggayhorrorfan

joseph-days

He arose from the dead more times than Jason, Michael and Freddy combined. But the bittersweet reality of fictional characters is that they are played by real people and Joseph Mascolo, the beloved portrayer of Days of Our Lives’ most popular Gothic zombie Stefano DiMera, unfortunately, proved that sad truth with his passing on December 7th, 2017 at the age of 87.

With his smooth (and often winking) delivery, Mascolo made DiMera one of daytime drama’s most popular villains. The bit of acting genius has been rewarded, over the years, by the fact that whether DiMera was kidnapping and cloning his rivals or leaving Marlena, the soap’s eternal heroine, open for satanic possession or even rising from the ashes of a watery grave – his character earned the nickname “The Phoenix” for his seeming ability to regenerate from willpower alone, Mascolo was always embraced, heartily, by the show’s fans. joseph-jaws-2

Horror fans who don’t need a little love in the afternoon and are totally unaware of DiMera’s supernatural villainy, have reason to mourn Mascolo, as well.  Notable among his many credits, he brought a nice sense of bravado to businessman Len Peterson in Jaws 2 and he was very popular among fans of that movie, even taking part in the book Jaws 2: The Making of the Hollywood Sequel, in the decades since its premiere.

So let’s wish this legend a fond journey into the unknown. May he ascend, forever, in our hearts.

Kassie DePaiva: Evil Dead II Favorite Scores Emmy Nomination!

Published April 8, 2016 by biggayhorrorfan
Kassie1

DaPaiva delivered on a recent Castle episode, as well!

What could be better than a hurtling eyeball in the mouth? Well, probably not much. But Kassie DePaiva, whose spunky Bobby Joe in the seminal Evil Dead II suffered such a fate, has just been nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her work as the tragedy strewn Eve on Days of Our Lives. I imagine that honor has to rank pretty high up there, as well!

Indeed, DePaiva, whose other terror credits include 2013’s We Are What We Are, imbued all her storylines from her year and a half run on the show with an honest emotionality and sharp sense of the dramatic. Thus, this industry recognized honor is much deserved.

Nicely, the gorgeous True O’Brien, whom played Eve’s sensitive daughter Paige, was also nominated for her work, as well, in the Younger Actress category. Indeed, the fallout from the reveal of Eve’s affair with Paige’s boyfriend during the spring of 2015 was some of the best entertainment that the 50 year old soap had offered in awhile and kept ardent viewers glued to their television screens.

This year’s Daytime Emmy’s will occur on Sunday, May 1st. Here’s hoping that DePaiva and O’Brien take home the gold!

Kassie DePaiva…and the Disappearing Soap Character!

Published February 5, 2016 by biggayhorrorfan

Kassie ExitA ghost is scary. But, a soap opera character disappearing into thin air…now that’s truly terrifying!

Of course, that is exactly what seems to have happened with Days of Our Lives’ Eve Donovan, so passionately portrayed by Evil Dead II’s irreplaceable Kassie DePaiva. The victim of several unfortunate plotlines during her year and a half run, DePaiva’s Eve was written out of the show by the current powers-that-be. But any fans hoping for a wrap-up of her adventures on the character’s final airdate were in for a rude surprise.

In fact, as of this writing, Eve is still actually in the middle of several storylines. As of Tuesday, February 2nd (her last episode), she was dealing with a tentative reconnection with an ex-husband, as well as the complications of being the sometime girlfriend of Days’ powerful district attorney. Most importantly, she is still (supposedly) acting as the singing mentor to one of the show’s teens, Claire, with an audition at Juilliard for the young girl in the offing. Even more strangely, on her final show, Eve had a run-in with Claire’s mother, Belle, a legacy character, setting up what should have been an interesting rivalry. Frankly, it was one of the most confusing (non) exits in soap opera history, and DePaiva, who invested the character with grit and remorse, deserved so much better.

Of course, earning an Emmy pre-nomination for her work (as Eve dealt with the murder of her only child) must surely be some kind of comfort to DePaiva, a distinguished soap opera veteran, and her loyal fans. She will, also, be making a truly fun appearance on the Valentine’s Day episode of Castle, where she will reunite with a bevy of her former One Life to Live co-stars.castle

Still…if Days viewers do happen to catch a stray, toned leg high stepping to a sophisticated beat or a thin, bedazzled arm gesticulating wildly in the background…they should have no fear. It’ll just be poor old Eve trying to fight her way out of sudden invisibility…something that the glorious DePaiva will never have to worry about.

As the Stab Burns: Denice Duff

Published November 23, 2015 by biggayhorrorfan

Denice 2

And she thought Anders Hove was bad!

Fans of Full Moon’s Subspecies would probably nominate Denice Duff’s sensitive (yet provocative) Michelle as their favorite vamp in that horror fantasy series. But Duff, currently, is receiving intense focus of another kind as Wendy on NBC’s Days of Our Lives. A concerned midwife, Wendy has recently been taken hostage by the increasingly psychotic Ben who, seemingly, plans to make her deliver his fiancé’s premature baby in woodsy, less than ideal circumstances.

Denice 3Of course Duff, whose terror credits include The Monster Man, Straun House (AKA Dr. Rage), Night of the Living Dead 3D: Reanimation and Vampire Resurrection (which she, also, directed), has been dealing with dubious gents for years now. Therefore, her calm yet frightened demeanor here not only signifies her wide acting range, but also allows hope that Wendy and her new found charge, Abigail, will most likely make it out of this situation alive.

Of course, there is only one way to find out for sure, and that is to simply tune in tomorrow!

More info on Duff can be gathered at www.deniceduff.com. Days episodes are available for viewing at http://www.nbc.com/days-of-our-lives.
