Hold onto yer wigs!!! Dagger Cast has turned into DRAG-GER CAST!!! Our latest episode features Bev Rage (AKA Josh J. Coles) who, along with her amazing band The Drinks, is truly showing the world what it means to be a potent glitter punk waitress! Bev truly brings the sunny mayhem here while also talking, seriously, about how she sees the drag community fitting into the world of horror in light of the country’s current hate filled climate! You can dive into the mascara strewn mosh pit at https://soundcloud.com/daggercast.

We’ve also added an exciting new addition to the show. As there’s nothing I love more than a classic cinema diva in an old school gothic horror piece, producer Jared Olson and co-host Lindsey Charles are allowing me to indulge my devotion to these grand femmes in a new Dagger Cast segment called Dr. Diva! In the first attempt, I get to sing the praises of the glorious writer-director-actress Ida Lupino and her stunning work in 1941’s atmospheric chiller Ladies in Retirement!

Enjoy!!! …and until the next time, SWEET love and pink GRUE, Big Gay Horror Fan!

It’s the end of Pride Month and you’re probably still go-go-going!

But if you need to catch your breath for a moment, feel free to take a second and listen to the latest episode of Dagger Cast with the amazing Kyra Leigh. Leigh is also always go-go-going as the musical director of Chicago’s production of Head Over Heels, the Go-Go’s musical, and here she talks about that project and her take on horror as a Trans Woman. We discuss Sleepaway Camp, Dressed to Kill and how Leigh feels the Trans Community should fit into upcoming genre films. It’s an important and informative talk fueled by her grand heart and infectious spirit.

Spinsters of Horror

Spinsters of Horror

Social media has its drawbacks. But if you’re lucky, you can also discover the coolest people, including many who live many miles away.

Speaking to that point, I’ve recently stumbled upon two amazing women, Kelly and Jessica. They are true horror lovers, exciting podcasters and they, sparkle bewitchingly, with a true sense of fun. I really think you need to check them out.

Nicely, not only do they, as the (Ontario based) Spinsters of Horror, produce podcasts that are gleeful, but they also look at gender and other social constructs in the genre with a serious eye and a spot on analytic expertise.

Be sure to find out about everything these two goddesses of cinematic mayhem at

Dagger Cast

Stevie Nicks may have celebrated the Edge of Seventeen, but as I stand on the verge of 51, I have to laud Dagger Cast! Initiated by Jared Olsen, one half of edgy production company nite smoke, this podcast looks at horror from the sense of the other. By the celebrating the LGBTQ, Black, Latinx and female (etc. etc…) viewpoint of horror, this podcast aims to reach into the hidden depths of the horror community, gazing far past the straight white gaze that has dominated it for so many years. As my co-host, the dynamic Lindsey Charles (lead singer of The Cell Phones), has often asked of our guests, we want to find out what you, that special and unique force in society, needs from this genre – a genre that can so beautiful express the hopes and fears of outsiders everywhere. Of course, we aim to do this with a sense of fun and irreverent punk rock spirit, as well!

To determine if we’ve succeeded, you can check out our first few episodes at https://soundcloud.com/daggercast.

Meanwhile, more information is available at https://www.facebook.com/daggercast/, as well.

Sybil Danning on Double Page Spread

Published September 1, 2018 by biggayhorrorfan

Sybil PS

So…I haven’t won that Pulitzer Prize for writing…and I don’t have a happy husband and a house full of tumbling, peanut butter stained kids. But…I have been “sandwiched” by Sybil Danning and Wendi Freeman on a popular podcast. Thankfully, in my world, that makes me the winner.

Danning, of course, is the action goddess who appeared in such cult classics as Battle Beyond the Stars, Howling II, Chained Heat and Hercules. Freeman, meanwhile, is the friendly presence behind Double Page Spread, an entertaining look at the comic book industry.

On a recent episode of DPS, I was lucky enough to join Wendi as she and Sybil chatted about fitness, the power of positivity, Danning’s favorite films and her most recent project – Ruger, a comic based upon L.A. Bounty, one of the movies that established Danning as the female heir to Clint Eastwood and that ilk.

In Remembrance: Stevie Dismie

Published August 20, 2018 by biggayhorrorfan

Stevie

When someone dies…especially when they leave this plane of existence far too soon, it is always a reminder to live life more boldly, to strive harder to find a way across our insecurities and connect with the world at large more. It’s a reminder that our regrets, should we choose to have them, should be for the failure of things that we’ve attempted and not for the things that we were too scared to even contemplate doing.

I didn’t know Stevie Dismie well. But I have a feeling that is what he would want us to do in the wake of his passing. Dismie, one of the sassy, fun forces behind the original Comic Book Queers Podcast, lost his battle with cancer on August 16th, 2018 and the world of fandom now is lacking an alternative force of nature.

Thankfully, Dismie, who also hosted many events in Chicago celebrating the queer connection to the superhero universe, will always have a legacy as one of the important voices in helping the world realize that the LGBTQ community was invaluable to the world of geekdom. With that in mind, let’s vow to laugh a bit more, live a bit more fearlessly and, of course, read some more damn graphic novels already!

May his double page spread float on forever.

(Special thanks to Dismie’s dear friend Lindsay Silk-Kremenak…who provided the slightly pilfered image. I feel it probably captured his essence really nicely.)

Witchcraft Series: The Final Adventure?

Published June 16, 2017 by biggayhorrorfan

Some folks dip their toes in the pool. Others dive in, body first.

Derrick Carey of the sick cinematic podcast Astro Radio Z belongs to the latter category. He and various other mutants, myself included, have been immersing themselves in the deep end by analyzing the low budget soft core horror series Witchcraft – for…gulp…years now!

Naturally, now that Witchcraft 14: Angel of Death, Witchcraft 15: Blood Rose and Witchcraft 16: Hollywood Coven have been unleashed upon the world, we had to take a look and give our (sometimes) zany, (occasionally) well modulated opinions on them. Nicely, we are joined here by Dustin Hubbard, an accomplished filmmaker and, perhaps, the greatest Witchcraft fan ever.
